Presentation

In 1607, Claudio Monteverdi premiered his Orfeo, a fable in music, in Mantua for the opening of Carnival at the Ducal Theatre of Duke Vincenzo I. For the first time in the history of music, true characters were imbued with deeply human emotions: with this exceptional dramatic power, modern opera was born. The tenor Emiliano Gonzalez Toro is one of the foremost experts on this repertoire, which he has performed on the most prestigious stages. He is currently the most credible heir to the tenor Francesco Rasi, who created the role of Orfeo in Mantua. The ensemble I Gemelli, which he directs, brings together world-class vocal and instrumental virtuosos, all acclaimed specialists of the Italian Seicento. The CD recording they have just made together could become the modern reference for this mythical score above all others: this concert highlights its magnificence, but this time live and before an audience!

Programme
