Presentation
In European Baroque music, the grand motets are one of the most representative forms of French music. Initially developed for the King’s Chapel by Du Mont and Lully, and brought to fruition by Delalande over four decades at the service of Louis XIV, these works, which resonated every day at the King’s Mass, later became the pillars of the programs of the Concert Spirituel, founded in 1725. It was then that two new masters would assert themselves in this style: Rameau and Mondonville.
Show moreJean-Philippe Rameau composed his grand motets even before his arrival in Paris. They are an exception within the genre: they were not written for the King’s Chapel but around 1720, when Rameau was the organist at the Cathedral of Clermont-Ferrand! Their resemblance to the future operas of the master is, however, evident, as the musical flavor they exude is both exceptional and subtle. His two masterpieces are the motets In Convertendo and Quam Dilecta, presented here.
Drawing lessons from both Lalande and Rameau, Mondonville became a true star of the Concert Spirituel with his motets, whose success even earned him a position at the Royal Chapel! The inventiveness and expressiveness of his compositions, where dramatic effects and rich colors enhance his perfect mastery of choral forces and orchestra, make them true gems and the last masterpieces of this powerfully French style. Celebrated in their time with multiple performances, the two motets Dominus Regnavit and In Exitu Israel are genuine masterpieces, comparable to the grand choral compositions of Bach or Handel.
Gathering sharp soloists and the choristers and musicians of his Ensemble Marguerite Louise, Gaétan Jarry brings his enthusiastic interpretation and passion for French music to these works, for a splendid program recorded in our discographic collection!
