Presentation
The last queen of France, with her exceptional, tragic, and glamorous destiny, deserved a ballet: Thierry Malandain has crafted a piece for her as grand as her legend, a show both colorful and deeply dedicated to Versailles and its Royal Opera.
Blamed as the evil genius of the kingdom and held responsible for all its misfortunes before her body was taken away in a cart, her head between her legs… Without her carefree nature, her reluctance toward her role as queen, her retreats to the Trianon, her favorites, coquetries, diamonds, the court gossip amplified by pamphlets and caricatures, the Revolution, and the belief that bloodshed contributed to progress, Marie-Antoinette might have continued her frivolous life and escaped a tortured death. How did a queen adored by an entire nation lose its affection only to die hated? How did someone who embodied the symbol of royalty help hasten its fall?
Show moreThierry Malandain’s ballet traces Marie-Antoinette’s journey at Versailles: from her arrival at court on her wedding day and the inauguration of the Royal Opera, to her departure in October 1789, which took her toward her fate… A magnificent show created in 2019 at the Royal Opera of Versailles, this ballet returns there this year!
