Presentation
Pygmalion continues its exploration of Romantic Germany with Stéphane Degout, after an unforgettable A German Requiem at the Royal Chapel the previous season. This new programme, centred on Brahms, is built around works in which death is no longer feared, but meditated upon and tamed.
Marked by the writing of his Requiem, Brahms incorporated this theme into numerous works from 1868 onwards, notably The Song of Destiny. At the heart of this journey is Symphony No. 1, the fruit of a long gestation period, an orchestral monument with deep, sombre accents.
With Stéphane Degout’s dramatic intensity and Raphaël Pichon’s inspired conducting, Pygmalion presents a mature Brahms, at once philosophic and romantic, carried by a masterly union of choir and orchestra.
