Presentation

In the late 1660s, the young composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier, aged just 17, embarked on a journey of initiation  through Italy. He was an accomplished singer and composer who returned to France a few years later, with a grandiose Messe à quatre chœurs in his catalogue of works, probably composed in Rome or shortly after his return.

This concert looks back on the direct influences Italy had on Charpentier, with a compulsory stop at the Vatican, where polychorality reigned supreme, and another one at the City of the Doges, where Venetian composers were making a major contribution to the dissemination and teaching of one of the most grandiose musical styles of the 17th century .

Productions of the Royal Opera.

This program will be recorded on a CD to be released on the Château de Versailles Spectacles label.

This concert is presented with the exceptional support of ADOR – Les Amis de l’Opéra Royal.
