1735 : the Neapolitan Porpora had been in London for two years, where he had come to break Handel’s monopoly on Italian opera. Is he about to succeed ? His fifth work for Opera of the Nobility is Polifemo, with the dazzling castrati Farinelli and Senesino (the latter having deserted Handel’s Royal Academy!). Bringing together the heroic characters of Ulysses, Polifemo, Calypso, Acis and Galatea, Porpora’s opera was a resounding success. Here, it is brought to the stage with the virtuoso performances of Franco Fagioli as Primo Uomo, Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian as Secondo Uomo and Julia Lezhneva as Prima Donna: against the backdrop of a roaring Etna, the cyclops Polifemo awaits connoisseurs of brilliance from the depths of his cave !
