Let’s ensure the future of the Royal Opera

ADOR and the Académie des Beaux-Arts established the Royal Opera Foundation to ensure the long-term future of the opera and concert season presented by the Palace of Versailles at the Royal Opera House and the Royal Chapel.

The Foundation of the Royal Opera of Versailles was created at the Palace of the Institut de France on Wednesday March 10, 2021. It is a “foundation under aegis” under the auspices of the Academy of Beaux Arts, created jointly by ADOR – the Friends of the Royal Opera and the Academy of Beaux Arts, a merger of the royal academies of painting, sculpture, architecture and music.

In hosting this foundation in service of the Royal Opera, the Academy of Fine Arts fully fulfils its statutory mission of defending and promoting the artistic heritage of France.

Laurent Petitgirard, Permanent Secretary of the Academy of Beaux Arts

Missions

The Friends of the Royal Opera Foundation – Académie des Beaux-Arts has, as its primary mission, to ensure the long-term future of the concert and performance season presented by the Château de Versailles.

  • It works on a lasting basis to safeguard a full artistic season at the Royal Opera House and the Royal Chapel.
  • The Foundation also supports educational initiatives connected with the Royal Opera’s programme and awards grants and prizes to artists.

To fulfil its mission, the Foundation relies on public generosity and welcomes donations and bequests. Its accounts are subject to the strict oversight of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.

The Foundation strengthens the capacity of ADOR in its support of the Royal Opera. Its donors benefit from tax advantages relating to income tax, corporation tax and real estate wealth tax, and may also transfer assets through legacies or lifetime gifts.

By supporting the Foundation, donors help secure the future of the Royal Opera by building an endowment that will contribute to sustaining a musical season of excellence, delighting and inspiring an ever wider audience.

By creating this foundation in such uncertain times, the Friends of the Royal Opera express to us their determination that music continues to live on in Versailles where Louis XIV wanted it to accompany every moment of the day.

Catherine Pégard, President of the Palace of Versailles (2011-2024)

Governance

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of 6 members :

  • College of Donors : Aline Foriel-Destezet, the current Vice President of the ADOR; Wilfried Meynet, the Delegate of the Founders’ Committee; Alain Pouyat, the Delegate of the Founders’ Committee.
  • The delegation from the Académie des Beaux-Arts included its Permanent Secretary, Laurent Petitgirard, and the Academicians Muriel Mayette-Holtz, Adrien Goetz, Alain-Charles Perrot and Guy Boyer.

On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Opéra Royal, it was important for me to personally and actively contribute to its influence by initiating this foundation whose mission is to perpetuate a musical season at the Château de Versailles.
