A treasure of French heritage, the Royal Opera of the Château de Versailles immerses us in history through its architecture and its programme, in which music and marvels reign supreme. The Royal Opera is an iconic venue for the arts, dedicated to music from the 17th and 18th centuries, which is brought to life by Château de Versailles Spectacles through a classical repertoire and original productions, including operas, concerts, special recitals, ballets and plays.
Lifting the curtain on the history of the Royal Opera
First dreamt up by Louis XIV, built under Louis XV and inaugurated in May 1770 for the wedding celebrations of the Dauphin, the future King Louis XVI, and the Archduchess Marie-Antoinette, the Royal Opera of the Château of Versailles is a true feat of technical skill and decorative refinement – its striking décor, its structure made entirely of painted wood and its acoustics are remarkable.
Throughout its history, various festivities, shows and parliamentary debates have taken place in this blue-and-gold setting, which at the time it was built was the largest performance venue in Europe.
The shows, created specifically for this venue, take us back to a time when Versailles was one of Europe’s leading centres of musical creation.
