Presentation
Giulio Cesare is without a doubt one of Handel’s most beautiful operas, but more than a history painting, it is above all a love story. Whereas in most operas political conflicts thwart the impulses of the heart and other passions, here it is the divergent reasons of state that encourage the blooming and affirmation of the most tender feelings. The librettist takes pleasure in placing many pitfalls on the road to love, and Handel responds with some of his most beautiful arias. A team well-versed in this repertoire – and what a team! – is brought together to perform this ode to love with utter class. Cecilia Bartoli wanted to pay tribute to the music with panache and the sense of drama for which she is well known: a musical event well suited to this queen of baroque singing, who performs Cleopatra with passion, grandeur and virtuosity !
