Presentation
The two myths of Attis converge in this new production: this masterpiece by Lully and Quinault, which was called the “King’s Opera” upon its creation in 1676 before the court, also became, three centuries later, a significant moment in the rediscovery of the great French Baroque operas, thanks to the productions by William Christie and Jean-Marie Villégier presented twice at the Royal Opera of Versailles.
Atys is a climax of the emerging lyrical art: it places love at the heart of the plot, and its hero, for the first time in Lully’s works, dies on stage, provoking a remarkable lament capable of moving even the hardest heart to tears. Lully’s incredible music enhances the splendid tragic text by Philippe Quinault, creating their first joint masterpiece.
Now comes a new version, one that combines the musical fervour of Leonardo García-Alarcón with the choreographic splendour of Angelin Preljocaj, to once again allow the wonders of Atys to captivate the souls of the audience with so much charm and emotion.

Lully – Atys

N°113
Atys stands as the pinnacle of Lully’s triumph, having become the opera of the King. The piece weaves love as its central thread, blending human and divine passions through the tragic fates of Atys and Cybèle. Leonardo García-Alarcón conducts this rendition with a subtlety that brings out the full beauty of Lully’s music.
