Presentation
The last Queen of France, with her exceptional, tragic, and glamorous destiny, deserved a ballet: Thierry Malandain has tailored a made-to-measure costume for her in a colourful production deeply devoted to Versailles and its Royal Opera.
Labelled the evil genius of the kingdom and blamed for all its misfortunes before her body was carted away in a wheelbarrow, her head between her legs –: Marie-Antoinette. Without her carefreeness, her reluctance toward her role as Queen, without Trianon, her favourites, her flirtations, her diamonds; without the court gossip amplified by pamphlets and caricatures, without the Revolution and the belief that spilled blood meant progress, she would certainly have continued her frivolous life and not died in torment. How did a queen beloved by an entire people lose their affection before dying from their hatred? How did she, who embodied the very symbol of royalty, help hasten its fall ?
Thierry Malandain’s ballet traces Marie-Antoinette’s journey in Versailles: from her arrival at court on the day of her wedding and the inauguration of the Royal Opera, to her departure in October 1789, when she was taken away toward her destiny… A magnificent production premièred in 2019 at the Royal Opera of the Palace of Versailles.
