Presentation

Leonardo García-Alarcón will once again take to the stage at the Royal Opera to conduct Jean-Philippe Rameau’s third opera with Cappella Mediterranea and the  Chœur de Chambre de Namur.

Castor et Pollux explores the theme of the power of sacrifice and brotherly bonds in the face of divine laws. Pollux, the immortal son of Jupiter, renounces his immortality to descend to the Underworld and bring his brother Castor back to life. Rameau explores the intertwining of brotherly love against a backdrop of heroism and echoes of war.

Already the author of numerous pieces for keyboard, religious works and occasional pieces, Jean-Philippe Rameau, by then in his fifties, composed in 1733 his first lyric tragedy, Hippolyte et Aricie. Les Indes galantes followed in 1735, and finally, in 1737, Castor et Pollux. The composer incorporates Italianate madrigalisms, virtuoso ornamentation, unusual chord progressions, subtle dissonances, and rich orchestral textures into these five acts punctuated by dance interludes, all aimed at emphasising the characters’ emotions and dramatic tensions.

With a dual desire to return to the roots of the work and to introduce audiences to a lesser-known score, Leonardo García-Alarcón decided to approach the rarely performed 1737 version, more innovative and subtle than the revised 1754 one. Against the backdrop of a war between two neighbouring peoples that left deep scars, Rameau paints an almost psychological portrait of the characters, especially Pollux torn between his love for Telaira, the betrothed of his brother Castor, and his duty towards the latter. Willing to renounce his immortality to save his mortal brother fallen in battle, Pollux descends into the Underworld to take his place. This story is about a brotherhood that seeks to be universal and that transcends everything – even death – an unconditional love that conquers the horrors of war.

Rameau – Les Paladins

N°54

If Rameau’s career was made up of great operatic successes, there were also a few failures; Les Paladins is certainly one of them. And yet, Valentin Tournet, a valiant knight at the helm of his army, the Chapelle Harmonique, reveals here his misunderstood strength – extravagance, laughable heroes, and musical prowess !
