A Ring in Versailles, the dream of Ludwig II of Bavaria
After the success of Das Rheingoldin May 2023, Die Walküre in March 2024, and Siegfried in May 2025, comes the final part of the Ring Cycle.
For any opera house, Wagner’s Ring – Der Ring des Nibelungen – is one of the pinnacles of lyrical art. Composed between 1853 and 1874, this mythical cycle is conceived as a “scenic festival” consisting of a prologue: Das Rheingold, and three days: Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung. This legendary tetralogy was premièred in its entirety for the opening of the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in 1876.
The passionate devotion of King Ludwig II of Bavaria for Versailles and for Wagner creates a unique connection between this Ring and the world’s most beautiful Palace.
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Ring (1876–2026), the Royal Opera of the Palace de Versailles has invited the Saarland State Theatre – which has staged each of the four operas over the past three seasons – to perform them in concert at Versailles.
For every German opera house, regularly performing the Ring Cycle is a tradition. The singers of the permanent company, for whom this is a staple of the repertoire, are joined here by Wagnerian soloists who perform the major roles in all the German-language operas. The project presented at Versailles by the Saarbrücken Opera is thus deeply rooted in 150 years of performance tradition.
