FOUR CENTURIES OF MUSIC AT VERSAILLES
Music could be heard at all times and in all places at Versailles. From sunrise to sunset, it accompanied all the major moments of life at the Court, at suppers and hunts, festivities, in the groves and gardens, and at the Trianon, too.
Today, music has reclaimed its rightful place at Versailles, thanks not only to the programme of the Royal Opera but also to the Château de Versailles Spectacles record label.
Our Château de Versailles Spectacles record collection was launched in 2018 and now features more than one hundred records and video recordings – all made in the most beautiful halls of the Château de Versailles –, preserving the memory of concerts imbued with the spirit of the Royal Opera, the Royal Chapel, the Hall of Mirrors and more. These pieces, some of them brought to life by little-known or forgotten composers such as Charpentier, the Couperins, Rameau and Rebel, and revived by acclaimed orchestras and figures such as Vincent Dumestre and his Poème Harmonique, Gaétan Jarry and Marguerite Louise, Leonardo García Alarcón and his Cappella Mediterranea, not to mention the organists Bernard Foccroulle and Olivier Latry on the 1710 Great Organs of the Chapel, to cite just a few, will therefore receive their rightful tributes. The Orchestra of the Royal Opera, founded in 2019, also makes a key contribution, participating actively in the label’s recordings. Lyrical performances mingle with prestigious concerts and intimate chamber music in this programme, where pieces from the European – and especially French – baroque repertoire reign supreme.
Versailles and its music represents inestimable artistic and historical heritage, an idyll of so-called “French-style” elegance and delight; the CD, as a physical object, is the tangible form of an imaginary world that it seeks to bring to life. It is an objet d’art in its own right, and we are its custodians.
With frequent media acclaim in France and abroad (Diamant d’Opéra magazine, CHOC de Classica, Diapason d’Or, among others), recordings continue in this royal setting. In 2022, a year of recognition, the Château de Versailles Spectacles record label was crowned “Label of the Year” at the prestigious ICMA (International Classical Music Awards 2022) for the excellence of its entire collection.
