The new 2025/2026 season is coming to the Royal Opera of the Palace of Versailles: more than 120 performances for an unforgettable musical journey !
Among the highlights of this new season at the Royal Opera are no fewer than 11 staged operas, combining new productions and revivals of past seasons’ great successes.
True to its history and the history of Versailles, the baroque and classical repertoire is of course at the heart of the programme, which gives pride of place to Lully, Louis XIV’s favourite composer, with a revival of Lully’s grandiose production of Atys directed by Angelin Preljocaj. Roland performed by Emiliano Gonzalez Toro, and Armide, by Vincent Dumestre, two tragédies en musique, or lyrical tragedies, in concert version, the concert Fragments amoureux selected by Sébastien Daucé, the famous and timeless comédie-ballet Le Bourgeois gentilhomme directed by Denis Podalydès, complete the portrait of the most famous Superintendent of Versailles. But the sacred music of Charpentier and Dumont will also be showcased.
The Royal Opera will also present Purcell’s Dido and Æneas in a colourful and playful production by Cécile Roussat et Julien Lubek, Rameau’s Platée, revisited by the burlesque duo Shirley and Dino, Handel‘s passionate and virtuoso Ariodante by Nicolas Briançon, and Mozart‘s whimsical Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio), performed by Michel Fau. Not to mention the irresistible Cinesi by Gluck !
The Château de Versailles is also dedicated “To all the Glories of France”, and there’s plenty of room for romanticism, with Rossini’s virtuoso Cinderella (La Cenerentola), sung in French, Gounod’s grandiose Faust, and finally Offenbach’s hilarious La Vie parisienne, with costumes and staging by Christian Lacroix. And to mark the 150th anniversary of the Bayreuth Festival, the finale of Wagner‘s famous Ring Cycle with the Saarland State Theatre company : Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods) will be performed on the stage of the world’s most beautiful opera house for an ascent to Valhalla under the direction of Sébastien Rouland.
The Royal Opera is committed to showcasing emerging talent in numerous productions and recitals, bringing together artists of all generations, and is training its second cohort of the Royal Opera Academy, notably in Morin’s La Chasse du cerf, and welcomes William Christie’s Le Jardin des Voix for Charpentier’s Les arts florissants. Set to perform on stage at the Royal Opera include the singers Gaëlle Arquez, Juliette Mey, Sandrine Piau, Vanina Santoni, Mathias Vidal, Reinoud Van Mechelen, Max Emanuel Cenčić, Lea Desandre, Theo Imart, Julien Behr, Gwendoline Blondeel, Patrick Kabongo, Éléonore Pancrazi, Alex Rosen, and Franco Fagioli; and the conductor John Eliot Gardiner for four unmissable concerts, Raphaël Pichon bringing Brahms to life, Hervé Niquet setting the stage on fire with Te Deum by Charpentier, and Thomas Dunford with Theodora by Handel.
The Royal Opera hosts both rare works and masterpieces from the repertoire. Thus, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons can be heard both in concerts and in the ballet The Seasons by Thierry Malandain, Il Vecchio Avaro by Gasparini, Euridice by Péri, the first opera ever composed, performed by Stéphane Fuget, and Médée et Jason by Salomon. Three iconic works by Rameau with also be performed in concert : Pygmalion by Camille Delaforge, Les Boréades by Reinoud Van Mechelen, and Castor et Pollux by Leonardo García Alarcón.
As it does every season, the Royal Chapel is hosting concerts around two sacred themes that are dear to Versailles : “Christmas at the Royal Chapel” and “Holy Week at the Royal Chapel“, filling this magnificent marble edifice with the most beautiful sacred music, such as Charpentier’s Messe de minuit pour Noël, Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Passions, and Couperin’s Leçons de Ténèbres.
A major player in the musical season, the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal takes centre stage at its home venue with more than 25 productions and over 57 performances, not to mention tours in France and abroad, often accompanied by the Chœur de l’Opéra Royal. Together they showcase the virtuosity of the Royal Opera of the Château de Versailles, under the direction of Gaétan Jarry, Stefan Plewniak, Laurent Campellone, Théotime Langlois de Swarte, Victor Jacob, Jean Baptiste Nicolas, Andrés Gabetta, and Justin Taylor.
All aboard for another exceptional season at the Royal Opera of the Château de Versailles, full of surprises, emotions, and discoveries !
