Presentation

Under the direction of their founder, William Christie, Les Arts Florissants present a program juxtaposing the works of Marc-Antoine Charpentier and André Campra.

To move hearts and stir souls: such is the goal of sacred music, a mission pursued by composers serving at the Chapelle Royale in Versailles, like Marc-Antoine Charpentier (during the reign of Louis XIV) and André Campra (a bit later). The Psalms of the first nocturnes for Wednesday, Thursday, and Good Friday, intended to accompany Holy Week celebrations, are paired with the Requiem of the other. This Requiem, one of the major works of the French Baroque, showcases virtuosic passages and dramatic effects reminiscent of the operatic side of Campra’s career, all while adhering to the form and style of a traditional Mass for the dead.
