Presentation

When Louis XIV was in the prime of his life and Versailles in its early days, royal fêtes were the main ornaments of his gardens, and the brilliant entertainments of the French court amazed all of Europe…

These prestigious events hosted much music, not only from Lully: the Molière / Charpentier duo was very prominent during this period. Le Malade imaginaire was thus performed at Versailles in front of the Grotte de Thétis in 1674 during the Royal Fêtes for the conquest of Franche-Comté.

The Pleasures of Versailles, a divertissement given for the inauguration of the Versailles Evening Apartments in 1682, depicts the pleasurable activities that took place during these evenings, at the king’s invitation: music, games, conversation… amidst buffets and dances.

Sébastien Daucé and his Ensemble Correspondances, fine specialists in 17th-century French music, bring a flourishing life and splendid colors to The Pleasures of Versailles!
