Presentation
Opera-Comique flourished in Europe during the second half of the 18th century, becoming a major lyrical style beloved by the public. Paris was its birthplace at the beginning of the century, with its Théâtre de la Foire, where librettists and composers harnessed its vitality to create works nearly opposite to the grand Tragédies Lyriques. With stories where gods and heroes no longer take center stage, replaced by peasants, nobles, and bourgeois, the librettos create simple and moving plots, with surprising twists that propel the action, which becomes highly theatrical. And orientalism allows for all kinds of fantasy!
Show moreThe arrival of brilliant composers such as Monsigny, Philidor, and later Grétry, brought extraordinary successes, also due to the skillful librettos by Favart, Marmontel, and Sedaine. In 1752, a French Theater for opera-comique performances was established in Vienna, where it gained exceptional popularity among the Viennese public. Gluck composed masterpieces for it, and Mozart was inspired by its style.
It is this brilliant, moving, and light repertoire that the young Canadian soprano Florie Valiquette is dedicated to defending today, with the collaboration of Gaétan Jarry. The Mozartian or Rossinian style owes so much to this French music of the 1750-1790s that the temptation was strong to create a selection of its finest works—here it is, with its harvest of gems, intended for a recording in our discographic collection!
