Presentation

One of the highlights of the 2021-2022 season of Les Arts Florissants, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Jardin des Voix academy!

At the court of Partenope, Queen of Naples, suitors abound to win the heart of the sovereign: Arsace, Prince of Corinth, seems to have won her favor, while the Prince of Rhodes, Armindo, is in despair. But they have not reckoned with the unwelcome arrival of Emilio, King of Cumae, who aims to conquer the beautiful queen by force. As Partenope seeks advice from Captain Ormonte, tensions rise with the arrival of a certain Eurimene… who is none other than Princess Rosmira, a jilted lover seeking revenge on Arsace by disguising herself as a man. When he challenges her to a duel and demands that she fight bare-chested to expose her identity, the time will come for the masks to fall…

This marks the very first time Les Arts Florissants have tackled Partenope—Handel’s first “comic” opera, in which the composer breaks free from the rules of opera seria. Conducted alternately by William Christie and Paul Agnew, and staged by Sophie Daneman, this new production invites us to rediscover this forgotten masterpiece… and to encounter six exceptional voices: the six laureates of the tenth edition of the Jardin des Voix, the renowned academy for young singers of Les Arts Florissants!
