Louis XIV was a King of Music: the array of works composed for his “official” life demonstrates this, with Lully’s Tragédies Lyriques, outdoor Carousels and Fanfares, Lalande’s Symphonies for the King’s Suppers, and the Grand Motets at the Royal Chapel. But who knows the intimate music of the Sun King? In the evening, his private apartment had its own compositions, played by the best musicians at court. The harpsichord, viola da gamba, and lute took precedence over drums and trumpets; the finest singers stood just a few meters from the sovereign, even in his bedroom, offering him one last bit of musical beauty to nourish his royal dreams. We would be around 1713, and Lalande, as superintendent of music, would have gathered a few musicians “requested by the King”: Marin Marais, Robert de Visée, Michel de la Barre, to present Louis with one final moment of informal and intimate music after the Grand Coucher.
