Presentation
The famous Four Seasons by Vivaldi, published in Amsterdam in 1725, achieved such success that they almost overshadow Vivaldi’s other concertos (over 500 in total!). While their popularity is largely due to their exceptionally expressive and virtuosic “program music,” Vivaldi was already a sought-after master throughout Europe. His operatic successes placed him at the forefront of Italian composers, earning him admiration and frequent performances in France. He was even commissioned by the French ambassador in Venice to compose works in honor of Louis XV. It was likely through this connection that a French collector requested concertos from Vivaldi, resulting in what are now known as the 12 Concertos of Paris: I Concerti di Parigi.
Show moreTheir style often incorporates elements of French music, such as overtures or typically French movements like the Bourrée and Menuet, yet these are, above all, true and dazzling Vivaldian concertos. Filled with inventiveness, vibrant colors, exquisite melodies, and flawless virtuosity, these pieces encapsulate all of Vivaldi’s strengths in a cycle of twelve richly varied works. These concertos are sure to be a revelation for audiences, especially with the release of a CD that has brought them the recognition they deserve. They will be performed with vitality by the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal, led from the first violin by their conductor Stefan Plewniak, a true “devil of the violin.” And in The Four Seasons, he is nothing short of irresistible, spinning through the skies as the prince of summer and the icy demon of winter!
