Presentation
In 1721, Bach dedicated a cycle of six concertos to the Margrave of Brandenburg, uncle of the King of Prussia. These “six concerts for several instruments”, typically of Bach’s “art of the concerto”, are of a rare virtuosity, making use of strings as well as various soloists such as the harpsichord and trumpet, in a blend of styles dominated by the Italian concerto, but with an extraordinary science of German-style contrapuntal interweaving and magnificent French influences.
But the masterpiece is there, a fantastic demonstration of Bach’s genius in creating a new type of concerto, not quite Italian and not quite in the French style, but an original form, structured by effervescent writing and melodies of startling beauty. The concertos follow one another without resembling one another, all different in terms of performers and solo instruments, but all united by Bach’s inventive ardour. The result is an exceptional body of work, ranging from an old-fashioned concerto of viols (but what irresistible volubility, with seven performers!) to an orchestral form with nineteen musicians, including two horns and three oboes.
This work would enjoy a posterity worthy of the gems it contains : today, it is the basis of chamber and orchestral music, especially in Germany, where it is the instrumentalist’s Bible.
