Presentation
The life of Christina of Sweden reads like a remarkably modern adventure. An eminently female figure in a radically male world, Christina of Sweden asserted herself through extraordinary determination and exemplary resilience, establishing herself as a woman capable of standing up to the great powers of her time. Immersed at the heart of political authority, travelling from Sweden to the Papal States, her political manoeuvres were woven throughout the course of her journeys, passing through rival European powers such as the court of France and the states of the Holy Roman Empire.
Throughout her travels, she displayed a particular passion for the arts, and especially for music, of which she was a great patron. Each of her visits was marked by increasingly sumptuous musical ceremonies and concerts. This programme retraces that long journey, in which music and power were closely intertwined.
Show moreBeginning with her accession to the throne, illustrated by Venite Sancte Spiritus and Venite Sponsa Christi, we then witness her abdication through the celebrated Fader vår in Düben’s version. Having laid aside the crown, she travelled to Innsbruck, where she converted to Catholicism. On that occasion, she attended a Mass given in her honour, most probably composed by Antonio Bertali, composer to the city’s archduke.
Her time at the court of France brought her into contact with the royal chapel : Henry Du Mont was then Master of the Chapel, and his motet Pulsate tympana illustrates the demonstrative importance of music in honouring its patrons and sovereigns.
Finally, her last destination was Rome, where the former monarch assumed major roles as a patron of the arts and an essential figure in society. She took particular care to support young artists, bringing them to the forefront — notably the young and promising Alessandro Melani, who composed a Requiem now preserved in the Santini Collection, which houses many of the scores commissioned and amassed by and for Queen Christina of Sweden.
