Presentation

The remarkable story of the last Queen of France, at once tragic and glamorous, deserved a ballet : Thierry Malandain has crafted her an haute-couture costume for a colourful show deeply dedicated to Versailles and its Royal Opera.

Referred to as the French kingdom’s evil genius and held responsible for all its misfortunes, before her corpse was carted off in a wheelbarrow, with her severed head between her legs without her frivolity, without her reluctance with regard to her position as Queen, without the Trianon, without her favourites, her flirtatiousness, her diamonds, without the Court’s description exaggerated by pamphlets and caricatures, without the French Revolution and the belief that the blood spilled contributed to progress, Marie-Antoinette would have certainly continued her frivolous existence and wouldn’t have died in agony. How did a Queen so adored by an entire population lose their affection to such an extent as to be killed by their hatred ? How did the woman who embodied the symbol of royalty help to precipitate its downfall ?

Thierry Malandain’s ballet retraces Marie-Antoinette’s journey through Versailles : from her arrival at court, on the day of her wedding and the inauguration of the Royal Opera, to her departure in October 1789, which took her to her fate… A magnificent show premièred in 2019 at the Royal Opera of Versailles.

Co-produced by the Royal Opera / Château de Versailles Spectacles, Orchestre Symphonique d’Euskadi de Donostia / San Sebastián, Donostia Kultura – Victoria Eugenia Antzokia de Donostia / San Sebastián – Ballet T, Music Hall Antwerpen, Opéra de Saint-Etienne, Opéra de Reims, Théâtre des Salins, scène nationale de Martigues, CCN Malandain Ballet Biarritz.
