Presentation
Music for the inauguration of da Vinci’s Last Supper by the Dukes Sforza of Milan (1498).
Works by Josquin Desprez, Leçons des Ténèbres and Missa Galeazescha dedicated to the Sforzas.
In the 1490s, the House of Sforza, princes of Milan, were at the height of their glory. At the head of one of the greatest musical courts in Europe, they patronised all the arts and brought in the most important artistic figures of their time from far and wide.
This is how Leonardo da Vinci came to create his legendary fresco, L’Ultima Cena, in the future mausoleum of the Dukes of Milan.
Through the music of Milan at the end of the 15th century, this concert is a sonic evocation of this pictorial masterpiece. The laments of the Holy Week liturgy echo the Missa Galeazescha dedicated to the Sforzas. The sacred concert is preceded by a moment of secular music, where songs and musical interludes evoke the soundscape of a princely banquet. Finally, the Laudario di Milano closes the show with a scene in the vernacular, describing Christ’s final moments.
Co-produced by the Royal Opera / Château de Versailles Spectacles and Consort Musica Vera.
This concert is presented with the exceptional support of ADOR – Friends of the Royal Opera.
