Présentation

In February 1704, after many years of loyal service at the Sainte-Chapelle, Marc-Antoine Charpentier passed away, leaving behind him a considerable body of work, recognised today, three centuries later, as one of the most incredible creations of French art. Although he did not have the career that his genius deserved, he was a source of inspiration and a role model for many of his contemporaries: they all knew him, scrutinised his works and had a particular admiration for him.

Two of them, André Campra and Nicolas Bernier in particular, were particularly inspired by him, and even succeeded him after his death; the former in the service of the Jesuits on rue Saint Antoine, the latter as Master of Music at the Sainte-Chapelle. This programme brings together three major artists who are among the great creators of sacred music in the heart of the Grand Siècle.

Co-produced by the Royal Opera / Château de Versailles Spectacles and the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles.

Scores by Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Nicolas Bernier published by the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles.
