Presentation

Romanticism knew three dazzling geniuses, gone all too soon gone but bathed in exceptional glory. The Viennese composer Franz Schubert, who died at the age of thirty, left behind an unfinished Eighth Symphony of legendary tragic proportions. The next generation saw the birth, in Hamburg in 1809, of Felix Mendelssohn, a true genius of composition if ever there was one, whose famous Violin Concerto is one of the pillars of the repertoire, and a magnificent legacy of this musician who died at the age of thirty-eight. His contemporary, Frédéric Chopin, born near Warsaw in 1810, stunned Europe with his talent as a pianist and the imperishable works he left for his instrument, before he too died at the age of thirty-nine. These three prodigies of Romanticism are reunited for a concert of virtuosity and passion.

After winning First Prize at the Concours International Long-Thibaud in 2022, and setting the stage on fire at the Royal Opera the previous season in Beethoven’s The Emperor, the young Korean Hyuk Lee will tackle the most romantic of piano concertos. The following year, the Ukrainian violinist Bohdan Luts came away with a clutch of awards at the Long-Thibaud Competition (First Grand Prize, Press Prize, Audience Prize and Orchestra Prize) at just eighteen years of age! He will perform one of the greatest violin concertos in the repertoire, accompanied by the brilliant Victor Jacob at the helm of the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal.
