In 1643, just months before his death, Monteverdi treated Venetian audiences to the vastest repertoire of holy music of his life, commonly referred to as his musical testament. Taken from this equally illustrious and singular edition, called Selva Morale e Spirituale by its author, these Vespers for the Blessed Virgin are identical to the Vespers for the Blessed Virgin of 1610, which the composer had published in Mantova in his youth. Thirty years later, more mature and likely reworked several times over the course of his long life, these works combined choral passages, soloists and small choirs, develop the most varied instrumental colours and timbres, and blend tradition with modernity. In his twilight years, Monteverdi treats us here to the culmination of his work, perhaps the most sumptuous, theatrical and tragic piece of all.

Vincent Dumestre’s Poème Harmonique showcases the work and accompanies the soloists, among them the illustrious mezzo-soprano Eva Zaïcik. The virtuoso choir and dazzling orchestra transport you to an exhilarating Venice at the dawn of the baroque style.
