Presentation

Long before he composed his Requiem, Mozart produced another immense masterpiece of sacred music, a Mass in C minor (1783). He began writing this great composition for Vienna, having left his position in Salzburg.

To win over the public and the ecclesiastical authorities in the Austrian capital, he gave his very best, pushing the quality of his writing to its peak, inspired by the style of the great masters Handel and Bach whom he had discovered thanks to Baron Van Swieten, who had invited him into the imperial court library where handwritten manuscripts were kept. The music written by Mozart for this Great Mass is incredibly dense, like a cathedral of sound where each note contributes to spiritual elevation. The great contrasts, virtuoso choir and rhythmic orchestra all serve to create an impression of solemn and sensitive grandeur.

To top it all off, Mozart wrote a sublime soprano part, perching delicately in the most incredible high notes; this was the voice of his young wife, Constance Weber, a singer of legendary prowess. Constance, who was unwell at the time this score was written, was the object of all the young Mozart’s attention and he dedicated this custom masterpiece – a true monument of sacred music – to her. Mozart’s Great Mass is a magnificent culmination of the Viennese classical style.
