Presentation

This programme is above all a personal and artistic reflection on the myth of Pygmalion. By exploring two versions of this story (Rameau and Bailleux), I sought to reveal not only the different facets of this legend but also to question the role of art in our lives as artists. The myth of Pygmalion, beyond its first reading that might reduce the woman to a creation, serves as a pretext to explore what it means to create, what it means to give life to the inanimate – a reflection that, as artists, resonates deeply within us.

I wanted to pay tribute to the ballet act Pygmalion, which I consider a distillation of all that makes Jean-Philippe Rameau a great master. His orchestral writing shows a true symbiosis between instrumentalists and singers. The instrumental writing does not merely accompany the text: it enhances it, extends it, and fully participates in the dramatic expression. Rameau also entrusts the tenor with rare virtuosity, creating a heroic role tailor-made for countertenors, who are known for their incredible agility, such as Jéliote. This writing, full of technical challenges and lyrical richness, demands complete commitment from the performer. With a succession of dramatic arias, laments, perilous arias, and vocalisations, Rameau has created a work that pays tribute to the stars of the Paris Opera company, their incredible abilities and the passion they inspire.

Added to this is the rediscovery of Antoine Bailleux‘s Pigmalion, which was for me a unique and captivating adventure. Performing forgotten repertoire is not only an act of rediscovery of musical heritage but also a creative journey. This intense work is akin to that of a contemporary creation, or simply to the living experience of the stage: shaping a work by investing a personal part of oneself.

Finally, Lully was an obvious choice for me, as this homage to unconditional love, beyond social conventions, seemed like the ideal culmination of this journey around the Pygmalion myth.

Thus, this programme is conceived as a journey where every note, every inflection is designed to pay tribute to the creative artist – to the one who shapes their ideal by giving it life. As a musician, this quest finds its full meaning in Pigmalion, in the exaltation of dreamed beauty and artistic passion. May this music, by immersing us in these suspended moments, be an invitation to question our own relationship with art, with the creative act, and with what drives us, like Pygmalion, to bring our dreams to life.

N°182

“Pygmalion” tells the story of a sculptor who falls in love with his statue, begging it to come to life. Rameau’s opera, a masterpiece of metamorphosis and passion, is brilliantly performed by Camille Delaforge and Il Caravaggio in a modern and refined rendition.
