Presentation

Discover Roman polyphonic music from the 17th century.

The splendours of sacred music in Rome dazzled the whole of Europe: played at all times and in all places in the holy city, religious works boasted an exceptional musical lavishness. Here is a stunning collection.

Argentine conductor Leonardo García-Alarcón – a specialist in the Italian Baroque with a great talent for unearthing new scores – invites us to take an intoxicating dive into the treasures of polyphonic music as practised in 17th-century Rome. From Allegri’s famous Miserere, a masterpiece of the Sistine Chapel repertoire jealously guarded for centuries, to the poignantly chromatic motets of Alessandro Scarlatti, this concert is also an opportunity to discover a little-known mass by Giovanni Giorgi, a composer who was choirmaster at Saint-Jean-de-Latran before ending his career at the court of Lisbon.

“By competing in terms of ingenuity and multiple processes of spatialisation, 17th-century compositions gradually broke away from their religious constraints and turned them to their advantage.” – Philippe Ramin pour Bachtrack
