Presentation
How does one astound both the public and music critics at thirty? By becoming a lyrical star in just two seasons, thanks to a countertenor voice and the physique of a breakdancer! This is perhaps one of the fastest and most remarkable rises to fame in classical music, highlighting the baroque repertoire. For this new program, Jakub Józef Orliński has chosen to collaborate with his fellow Polish musicians from the Ensemble Il Giardino d’Amore, led by violinist Stefan Plewniak. The program is a showcase of works by two masters of the 18th century: the Italian Vivaldi and the German Handel.
Show moreFrom Handel, the program features arias from his mature operas that set London ablaze, performed by the most famous Italian castrati: Tamerlano (1724, Andrea Paccini), Riccardo Primo (1726, Senesino), Tolomeo (1728, Senesino), and Partenope (1730, Antonio Bernacchi). From Vivaldi, instrumental pieces will intersperse the Handel arias, taken from his famous violin concertos that were admired all over Europe during the composer’s lifetime. Orliński will also perform an aria from Vivaldi’s opera Giustino, created for the Carnival of Rome in 1724. Since women were not allowed to sing in Rome at the time, the opera was performed exclusively by male singers, including seven castratos! (Handel later adapted the same libretto for his own Giustino, premiered in London in 1737, with the castrato Gizziello in the title role).
There is no doubt that, in this display of virtuosity and sensitivity—two exceptional qualities of the castrati—Orliński will shine at the peak of his artistry!
