Presentation
Actéon is a little “hunting opera” composed by Charpentier in 1684 as a short musical tragedy in six scenes. The hunter Actéon accidentally stumbles across the goddess Diana as she is bathing, naked, with her nymphs. He hides, but Diana finds him and in her anger turns him into a deer, which is promptly devoured by her own dogs. A pastoral blending jubilation and tragedy, beauty and cruelty, Actéon is an ideal musical gem for showcasing the magnificent young singers of the Académie de l’Opéra Royal, brought together for their end-of-cycle performance. What better setting than the Hall of Mirrors for this thoroughly Baroque piece, and for an exceptional evening ?
