Presentation
This show is not part of the Royal Opera’s season.
The Covent Garden Sinfonietta, an orchestra made up of musicians from London’s Royal Opera House (voted ‘Opera Orchestra of the Year’ in 2019), is performing in Paris with a programme spanning forty years of European music, from 1872 to 1912. Under the baton of Emmanuel Plasson, a French conductor who is a regular at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the orchestra accompanies two young soloists who have won international competitions.
The first half features two concertos written in the late 1860s, both in A minor: Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto, with its bold structure in three linked movements, and Grieg’s famous Piano Concerto, whose opening chords are among the most recognisable in the Romantic repertoire.
After the interval, the programme shifts to the world of opera with Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos Symphonic Suite. This orchestral arrangement of one of the German composer’s most refined operas allows the Covent Garden Sinfonietta to return to its favourite territory : opera.
