Composed in 1680 to a medieval text by Arnulf of Leuven, Dietrich Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu nostri is a cycle of seven cantatas devoted to the body of Christ on the Cross. One of the most distinctive sacred works of the seventeenth century, it combines remarkable musical restraint with profound dramatic intensity. Each cantata meditates on one of Christ’s wounds, progressing from his feet to his face, and draws the listener into an intimate encounter with the suffering Saviour at the foot of the Cross.

Inviting both contemplation and quiet reflection, Membra Jesu nostri embodies the spirit of post–Thirty Years’ War Lutheran devotion, in which music became a deeply personal and profoundly embodied experience of the sacred.
