Presentation
Marc’Antonio e Cleopatra was first performed in Naples in 1725, when the young Hasse was commissioned to compose it for a private performance, with the castrato Farinelli and mezzo-soprano Vittoria Tesi taking the two title roles. Its success proved a crucial step in Hasse’s career, establishing him brilliantly on the Italian operatic scene through the virtuosity and beauty of the arias and duets in this serenata.
This new production, directed by Charles Di Meglio, brings together Catherine Trottmann and countertenor Théo Imart as the legendary couple. Under the baton of Andrés Gabetta, the Royal Opera Orchestra brings out the full splendour of this finely wrought score in the intimate setting of the Théâtre de la Reine. A timeless encounter between tragic passion and vocal mastery.
