Presentation
No work by Handel has achieved greater fame than Messiah. Premiered in Dublin in 1742, this oratorio was an immediate triumph. Demand for tickets was so great that gentlemen were asked to “leave their swords at home” and ladies to attend “without their hoop skirts”, allowing more people to be admitted and increasing the proceeds for charitable causes. Following the alto aria He Was Despised, the Reverend Delany is said to have exclaimed to the soloist: “Woman, for this, may all your sins be forgiven!”
When Messiah was revived in London, it quickly became Handel’s signature work. Performed thirty-six times during the composer’s lifetime, it soon came to embody all that is most majestic and sublime in music. Charles Jennens structured his libretto around the life of Christ in three parts: the Nativity, the Passion and Resurrection, and Redemption. The masterly alternation of solo arias and choruses is one of the work’s greatest strengths, while Handel’s extraordinary gift for lyricism shines through every aria. Whether tender or triumphant, they rank among his finest creations. The unforgettable choruses have resonated with audiences for more than 250 years. Legend has it that King George II was so moved by the Hallelujah chorus that he rose to his feet, prompting the entire audience to follow suit—a tradition that has continued in Britain ever since.
Under the direction of Théotime Langlois de Swarte, the Choir and Orchestra of the Royal Opera will be joined by an outstanding quartet of young soloists for this timeless masterpiece.
