Few works capture the splendour of Louis XIV’s reign more vividly than the Te Deum. A hymn of praise and thanksgiving, it resounded through the Royal Chapel to celebrate both military victories and milestones in the life of the royal family. This concert brings together the two finest French settings of the genre : Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s universally celebrated masterpiece and Michel-Richard de Lalande’s grandly conceived work of striking architectural nobility.

Introduced by its world-famous Baroque trumpet fanfare, Charpentier’s Te Deum unfolds with a magnificence matched only by its spiritual fervour. In contrast yet perfect complement, Lalande, the Sun King’s favourite composer, offers a score of remarkable polyphonic richness, in which masterly counterpoint is combined with exceptional dramatic power. Together, these two masterpieces embody the golden age of French sacred music, balancing the magnificence of Versailles with profound spiritual expression.

Under the direction of Gaétan Jarry, the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal joins forces with the Pages and Chantres of the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles and the Choir of the Opéra Royal. Joined by the outstanding young singers of the latest Opéra Royal Academy cohort, these distinguished ensembles restore the full brilliance of these masterpieces of the Grand Siècle beneath the soaring vaults of the Royal Chapel.
