Presentation
In an enchanted forest where reality mingles with dreams, illusion and the supernatural, the paths and romantic entanglements of young Athenians, woodland fairies… and a troupe of actors intertwine.
Inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Fairy Queen draws on Shakespeare’s comedy to create a magical and witty fable that, more than three hundred years after its premiere, continues to captivate audiences. First performed in London in 1692, just three years before Purcell’s untimely death at the age of thirty-five, this semi-opera is the work of a youthful genius. It features some of the finest music he ever composed from the deeply moving “O let me weep” to the sparkling “Thrice happy lovers” showcasing to the full his mastery of counterpoint and instinct for the theatre.
