To celebrate Christmas, the Royal Chapel is adorned with some of the finest music of the season, bringing together two Baroque masters: Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Johann Sebastian Bach. This programme, now a cherished fixture of the festive season at Versailles, creates a dialogue between the warmth of French Christmas traditions and the magnificent instrumental splendour of Northern Germany.

Charpentier’s Midnight Mass for Christmas is a work unlike any other. With remarkable sensitivity, the composer weaves beloved 17th-century French Christmas carols into the liturgy, transforming the Mass into a celebration that is at once joyful, intimate and deeply moving. In contrast, Bach’s Magnificat unfolds with dazzling orchestral brilliance. From the very first fanfare of trumpets and timpani, this jubilant masterpiece soars beneath the soaring vaults of the Royal Chapel, combining choral virtuosity with profound spiritual expression.

Under the baton of Valentin Tournet, the musicians of La Chapelle Harmonique, joined by a quintet of outstanding soloists, bring these timeless masterpieces vividly to life. A wonderful opportunity to rediscover the splendour and enchantment of Christmas celebrations as they were once experienced at Versailles.
