Rome, April 1639. Through the art of ornamentation, a simple falsobordone is transformed into a masterpiece – the very quintessence of the Baroque. Once reserved for the Holy Week liturgies in the Sistine Chapel, Allegri’s Miserere has long been regarded as one of the most legendary works in the choral repertoire.

Centred on Allegri’s polyphonic jewel, this programme invites the listener on a journey through the many musical transformations of Baroque Italy, in the company of Monteverdi, Marazzoli and Rossi. In seventeenth-century Italy, from the birth of opera onwards, music became the language of human passion. Even in church, saints and sinners alike express themselves with the eloquence of operatic characters. As the programme unfolds, the boundaries between the sacred and the secular become increasingly blurred, and their voices merge into one.
