The Oratorio per la Passione, also known as La Colpa, il Pentimento, la Grazia (Guilt, Repentance and Grace), is one of the hidden treasures created at the court of Cardinal Ottoboni, who wrote the libretto for Holy Week in Rome in 1708. It represents the pinnacle of Alessandro Scarlatti’s expressive power in his later years, yet its legacy was overshadowed by the La Resurrezione of the young Handel, an oratorio premiered just days later in the same Roman palace.

For this rediscovery, Hemiolia joins forces with the Neapolitan theatre company Teatri 35. Accompanied by the orchestra, three allegorical figures sung by the voices of Guilt, Grace and Repentance—echoing the three women who witnessed Christ’s Resurrection—engage in dialogue with three actors who create tableaux vivants inspired by Caravaggio’s paintings. The intense passions expressed in Scarlatti’s music find their full tragic force in this production, brought to life through the stark and powerful imagery of one of the great masters of the Italian Baroque.
