Presentation

For the past few seasons, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera has been led by the young conductor Théotime Langlois de Swarte, whose energy and imagination have fostered a remarkable artistic partnership. Together, they now embark on Beethoven’s monumental cycle of symphonies, presented at the Royal Opera for the very first time.

Having explored heroism and dance, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera continues its Beethoven cycle under the direction of Théotime Langlois de Swarte. This programme brings together two of the most iconic works in the history of music, composed at the same time yet revealing two strikingly contrasting worlds: the relentless struggle of the Fifth Symphony and the serene contemplation of the Sixth Symphony, the celebrated Pastoral.

With its instantly recognisable opening motif, the Fifth Symphony embodies humanity’s struggle against fate. It is a work of unrelenting dramatic tension, driving inexorably from darkness towards the triumphant light of its finale. In complete contrast, the Sixth Symphony offers an immersion in the natural world. A pioneering example of programme music, it evokes the joyful awakening of the countryside, the gentle murmur of a brook and the fury of a thunderstorm, before concluding with a peaceful hymn of thanksgiving.

Guided by Théotime Langlois de Swarte’s panache and luminous interpretation, these two masterpieces recover all their original vitality within the magnificent setting of the Royal Opera.
