As Emperor Nero’s mistress, she removes every obstacle standing between her and the throne. At the cost of breaking with her lover Ottone, ordering the philosopher Seneca to take his own life, and having the Empress Octavia repudiated, she finally achieves her goal: Poppea marries Nero. Poppea, Nero’s mistress, becomes Empress!

Busenello’s extraordinary libretto, blending eroticism with murderous intrigue against the backdrop of a Rome engulfed in flames, inspired Monteverdi to compose his final masterpiece. Brimming with invention and virtuosity, this Coronation is a fascinating operatic treasure, given its finest adornment by Emiliano Gonzalez Toro and Mathilde Étienne, together with a glittering cast.
