Presentation

A towering masterpiece of comic opera, composed by Gioachino Rossini when he was just twenty-three, The Barber of Seville premiered in Rome in 1816 and swiftly became a triumph across Europe. It reached Paris in 1819 at the Théâtre-Italien and entered the repertoire of the Opéra-Comique the following year. This major new production stands out for its historically informed approach, presenting Castil-Blaze’s 1820 French adaptation in tribute to the literary origins of Beaumarchais’s original play.

With its sparkling staging by Cécile Roussat and Julien Lubek, the production brings together an outstanding cast. Acclaimed baritone Florian Sempey brings all his charisma and flair to the title role of Figaro, alongside Catherine Trottmann as Rosina and Patrick Kabongo as Count Almaviva, both familiar favourites with Versailles audiences. Under the baton of Victor Jacob, the Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera illuminate Rossini’s score in a dazzling display of virtuosity and wit, offering a vibrant celebration of the Italian master’s genius.
