At the turn of the seventeenth century, German composers all looked to Italy for inspiration. Venice, with its magnificent sonic architecture and bold spatial effects, its cori spezzati and the flourishing tradition of polychoral music, exerted a profound influence that reached deep into Lutheran Germany. But the Thirty Years’ War brought this momentum to an abrupt halt. Musical expression became more intimate, giving rise to the kleine geistliche Konzerte, heirs to the Italian tradition of sacred motets for solo voice and continuo.

Conceived as a grand ecumenical Lutheran Vespers service, this programme brings together the great German and Italian masters: Praetorius, Schütz, Scheidt, Monteverdi and Cavalli. Their works engage in a rich dialogue of echoes and contrasts, in which polychorality becomes an expression of jubilation, vital energy and sensual exuberance—a celebration of the artistic exchange that helped shape the course of European music.
