Presentation
An unfinished masterpiece, a musical testament, a timeless sacred work that transcends the boundaries of the liturgy – Mozart’s Requiem has inspired every superlative. By the time of his death on 5 December 1791, the composer had completed the Introit and Kyrie in full, while leaving the substance of the next five movements, from the Dies Irae to the Confutatis, substantially laid out.
Ever since, the work has given rise to countless theories, numerous completions of its unfinished sections and, above all, a wealth of unforgettable performances. It continues to exert an extraordinary fascination over performers and audiences alike, and is now almost invariably heard in the form Mozart left behind. As though those final notes, written by the hand of a composer on the threshold of death, were made all the more precious by the silence that followed.
